Each month, we select a Qarikter/Egeneer to spotlight and share their knowledge and the impact they bring to the Qarik, an Egen Company team. This month, we’re proud to spotlight Shane Toner, Senior Engineer II.
What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering?
I really enjoy problem solving and with my educational background being in Physics and Maths, engineering seemed like a natural fit. It is also what drew me to join a consultancy, to have the opportunity to work with different clients and solve meaningful, complex problems across different domains.
What has been your proudest accomplishment at Qarik, an Egen Company so far?
Probably the success of my recent promotion, but generally, I have been given really good feedback by people that I admire, and that has been a huge source of pride during my 5 years here. The promotion feels like a result of that, and I am thankful to be a contributing member of such a talented group of people.
What’s the most rewarding part of your role? Why?
Delivering value for clients and solving problems efficiently. As I continue to gain more experience, I am starting to get much more satisfaction from solving business problems than technical problems. Tech is a set of tools but don’t let perfect be the enemy of good when designing solutions where the real priority is the value you add over time.
What’s your favorite memory or experience at Qarik, an Egen Company so far?
A few weeks after I joined, I had the opportunity to visit the New York office and the main meeting room had the most spectacular view over Central Park. It was amazing, a real pinch-yourself moment! Over the last 5 years, there have been many memories of working together to get client releases out on time and our social get-togethers!
Can you share a piece of career advice that has made a big impact on you?
Work as hard and as proactively as you can. When I was at university, I didn’t apply myself in the way I should have and ended up having to redo a lot, including another degree, but as soon as I started working hard, the results started looking after themselves, and it has made forging a career easier. You are responsible for your own path - own it! I would also say put your hand up to take on challenging problems, even if they are outside your comfort zone, and then be accountable for the delivery. You will stand out!
Beyond his work at Qarik, an Egen Company, Shane is a newly minted father who doesn’t get enough sleep. During his free time, you can often find Shane spending time with his family, trying to learn to golf, or watching Man United.
